Defend Against MedTech Cyber Breach: A Fireside Chat with Critical Healthcare Stakeholders

The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) brings connectivity and data-driven decision making to everyday healthcare practices. According to Deloitte, 48% of the equipment in an average North American hospital is connected, with estimates of reaching 68% by 2023. While IoMT expands the possibilities for improved care through new technologies, applications, gadgets and programs for devices, diagnostics, therapies and post-therapeutic surveillance, the increased risk and susceptibility to cyberattacks across this connected ecosystem with increasing real-time data exchange, commands and instructions can be overwhelming. A recent survey showed 82% of healthcare organizations have experienced an IoT-focused cyberattack in the last year, with 30% of attacks resulting in compromised end-user safety.

In this discussion, our panel will explore medical device regulation and cybersecurity requirements for addressing, managing and lessening safety risks, as well as securing and protecting patient PHI. David Guffrey

David Guffrey, MS, MSM, HCISPP, ITIL is the Biomedical Cybersecurity Specialist for Partners HealthCare System (PHS). Mr. Guffrey leads the medical device cybersecurity program for research and operations across the largest healthcare enterprise in Massachusetts. David’s background includes R&D in brain computer interfacing and neural prosthetic systems, linear and non-linear signal processing, electrical stimulation and feedback systems, virtual reality, as well as network and server architectures and medical device integration with electronic health records (EHR). In his current appointment, Mr. Guffrey leads myriad projects and activities across the Partners HealthCare enterprise. A major component of his work has been centered around architecting the MDPnP Cyber Lab, a state-of-the-art medical device cybersecurity laboratory with funding provided by the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA). David’s daily work includes risk assessments, technology assessments, penetration testing, and emergency preparedness & response activities as well as the nitty gritty work of applying his cybersecurity expertise to procurement contract negotiations. Mr. Guffrey is a leading voice representing healthcare delivery organization (HDO) interests in the national standards community. David’s passion lies at the nexus of medical devices, information technology, personnel practices and policies, and tackling the cybersecurity challenges of today to lay the groundwork for tomorrow.

Derek Rockwell

Derek Rockwell has been with Zipnosis since 2013. As Chief Information Security Officer and VP of Product & Engineering, Derek leads Zipnosis’ product, engineering, infrastructure, and security teams to deliver a best-in-class virtual care platform for Zipnosis' clients. He believes that healthcare should be simple, convenient, and low-cost for patients without compromising on the safety, effectiveness, or privacy of treatment. Prior to joining Zipnosis, Derek did web development for early-stage startups. He learned the intricacies of healthcare at UnitedHealth Group, focusing on a technology leadership program and developing an intrapreneurial program within innovation, research & development. Outside of work, Derek spends time mentoring Ruby on Rails web developers, following the latest trends in technology, and dabbling in music production.

Steven Abrahamson

Steve Abrahamson is Senior Director of Cyber Security and US/Canada Region CISO at GE Healthcare, based in his hometown of Waukesha, Wisconsin. Since initiating the GE Healthcare Med Tech Security Program in 2010, Steve has developed and implemented GE Healthcare’s Design Engineering Privacy and Security process, Vulnerability Management process, and digitized Product Security Governance and Information system. Steve is currently serving as Vice Chair for the Medical Imaging Technology Association (MITA) Cyber Security Committee. Steve has also been involved in promoting collaborative and systemic approaches with customers, regulators, and industry groups, and through frequent speaking engagements including FDA Workshops on Collaborative Approaches for Healthcare Cyber Security, US Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board, National Academy of Sciences Innovation Forum, HHS/NIST HIPAA Security Conference, HIMSS, AAMI, American Medical Device Summit, Cyber Security in Healthcare & Pharma (London), CHIMA Healthcare IoT Security (Shanghai), and Software Design for Medical Devices Global (Berlin). Prior to joining GE Healthcare, Steve worked at Texas Instruments in various technical management roles supporting precision-guided weapons programs within their Defense Electronics Group. Steve is a certified Six Sigma Black Belt / Master Black Belt, and has earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering at Marquette University and an MBA at the University of Dallas. Steve also represents GE as a member of GE’s corporate marathon team and has completed over 135 marathons.

He is a seasoned cybersecurity industry executive with more than 15 years of experience in driving engagement, business and revenue across video entertainment and connected industries. He transformed the Conditional Access landscape by launching the world’s first, and market-leading, one-way, software-only CA solution, Cloaked CA. Steeve is well-versed in the international business landscape, having held key strategic positions based out of the Netherlands, Canada and China throughout his career. Prior to his current leadership role at Irdeto, Steeve was Co-Chief Executive Officer at International Datacasting Corporation (IDC), a technology provider to the world’s premiere broadcasters based out of Canada. Steeve holds a master’s degree in Software Engineering from the École Nationale Supérieure of Bordeaux (France).

Before joining MedTech Intelligence, Tom served as Executive Director of the education arm of AdvaMed, the world’s largest trade association representing the medical device and diagnostics industries, where he created and ran workshops and conferences on regulatory, reimbursement, and other practical topics important to device, diagnostics, and combination product manufacturers. Prior to joining AdvaMed, Tom was Senior Advisor for Scientific Strategies at Georgetown University Medical Center, Senior Science Writer and Philadelphia Bureau Chief of Red Herring, a technology-oriented national business magazine, the Research and Creative Director for a graphic and industrial design firm specializing in medical products and services, and an independent marketing and educational consultant to pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device firms. He is the author of five books on topics including literary biography, law, psychiatry, and the history of the pharmaceutical industry, has co-authored seven humor books, written articles for magazines and newspapers including the Atlantic Monthly, Scientific American, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Tom has given lectures to academic, professional society, and popular audiences, and appeared on national and international radio and television, including Donahue and Fresh Air. He has done exhibition concept design and master plans for several U.S. science museums, and created the internationally traveling exhibit Salt of the Earth. Tom has a degree from Columbia University and did graduate work in developmental neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
